Seeking Justice in Busia: A Woman’s Fight Against Domestic Assault by Her Husband

In Busia, a 42-year-old woman named Metrine Okumu is seeking justice after being allegedly assaulted by her husband last Saturday, resulting in serious injuries.

Metrine was taken to Busia County and Referral Hospital for treatment of her injuries. According to her, this is not the first instance of assault from her husband.

She recounted the ordeal, saying, ” My husband had gone for work and stayed there for two weeks. On coming back, he slept on the couch. The following day, he went out. I followed him, I went to ask him about food, and he was sitting with another woman, drinking. They took the alcohol, poured it on me, and then started beating me.” Metrine is now calling for her husband’s arrest and prosecution.

The incident has drawn the attention of human rights activists in Busia, who criticize the local police for their lackadaisical approach to domestic violence cases.

An activist expressed their frustration, saying, “The police don’t take the beating of women seriously. But when a woman is beaten to the point of bleeding, and the police station is nearby, no one came to her aid.”

This assault took place just a day after the global celebration of International Women’s Day, highlighting the ongoing struggle against gender-based violence.
